FRAGILE

FRAGILE is a project exploring, through a magnifying glass, the character Laura - from Tennessee Williams´s play Glass Menagerie. She introduces her intimate and breakable environment to us in complete silence, where even the smallest movement becomes an astronomical event. Through her fragile presence we sink deeper into mute yet joyful loneliness. FRAGILE is a visual theatre performance where the theatrical space itself is perceived as a performer. Through meticulous lighting, and almost obsessional details of gesture, we fall to pieces - together with Laura - into shards, which will doubtlessly need putting together again.

Croatian artist Darinka Giljanović arrived with an offer to make a one-woman performance about a famous drama character, outside of the original play. Earlier she had made a project about Medeia, and FRAGILE ended up being the second part of her project called „Three metamorphoses“. The real inspiration behind the performance is the play by Tennessee Williams, „The Glass Menagerie“ and the character of Laura. During the process there were puppets, masks, different costumes and furniture, that in the end all filtered into what the performance FRAGILE is now. FRAGILE is a very special theatre performance, the main actress hardly moves, and lights are almost the most important part of the whole performance. It is also a performance about glass, imagination and about fragility of being. In a way we tried to create a certain imaginery aquarium, where the audience is caught up with Laura, where they also are very careful not to break the atmosphere of the theatre space. This can´t last too long though, and relieving laughter is not so far away…
